The baguette cut originally came around 1920 and was mainly practiced in France. The famous jewelry manufacturer Cartier was one of the first to use this new technique. He was also instrumental in enabling the spread of the baguette cut throughout Europe because he saw this hard-to-master cut as an expression of high-quality workmanship and perfection. The shape of the gemstone into a rectangle means that a relatively high proportion of the entire gemstone has to be ground down.
